What is Plastic Surgery?
Taken from the Greek word plastikos, meaning to mold or give form, plastic surgery
is the specialty of medicine dedicated to restoring and reshaping the human body. It
encompasses both reconstructive surgery, which is performed on abnormal structures of the
body caused by birth defects, developmental problems, injuries, infection, tumors, or
disease; and cosmetic surgery, which is performed to reshape or restore normal structures
of the body to improve appearance and self-esteem.
Who is a Plastic Surgeon?
A board-certified plastic surgeon is a doctor trained to be a concerned care-giver, a
wound-care expert, a problem-solver, an artist-designer, and a meticulous surgeon in the
operating room. You should consider a doctor certified by the American Board of Plastic
Surgery (ABPS).

COSMETIC SURGEON
PLASTIC SURGEONS are the only surgeons trained in all aspects and body areas for
cosmetic surgery
A FACIAL PLASTIC SURGEON is trained in ear, nose and throat
An OCULOPLASTIC SURGEON is trained in ophthalmology
WATCH FOR DECEPTIVE ADVERTISING!
Before and After pictures of surgery may be touched up and in some
cases not even the same patient
The ad does not list the name of the surgeons involved or their specialties, but
rather only a entity
For example, the Institute for Enhanced Liposuction........
The ad notes the surgeon is Board Certified, but does not tell you in what specialty
The ad states the surgeon is a Board Certified Cosmetic Surgeon
There is "NO" recognized Cosmetic Board certification
In the ad the listing of name is close to the word plastic surgery implying that the
surgeon is a Plastic surgeon when he or she is not
When the ad states or implies that this surgeon knows some new technique, which no
other surgeon knows about or that he or she is the surgeon doctors go to for their surgery
Laser surgery ads can imply that the laser can do miracles, when in fact the laser is
just another tool in the Plastic surgeons armament. In many cases it may add to cost and
length of time to complete the surgery
