If you are
considering breast
augmentation, you already
know that it is a surgical
procedure to enhance the
size and shape of your
breasts by using breast
implants. Any of the
following feelings or
conditions may indicate that
you are a good candidate for
breast augmentation:
- To enhance the body
contour of a women who,
for personal reasons,
feels her breast size is
too small.
- To correct a
reduction in breast
volume after pregnancy.
- Weight loss has
changed the size and
shape of your breasts.
- Dresses that fit
well around the hips are
often too large at the
bust line.
- To balance a
difference in breast
size, if one of your
breasts is noticeably
smaller than the other.
- You feel
self-conscious wearing a
swimsuit or form-fitting
top..
- As a reconstructive
technique following
breast surgery.
The breast consists of
milk ducts and glands
surrounded by fatty tissue,
and covered by skin.
The fatty tissue gives the
breast its soft feel and
shape. Pregnancy
(during which the milk
glands are temporarily
enlarged) and the inevitable
effects of gravity over time
stretch the skin envelope
and change breast shape.
A breast implant consists of
a silicone elastomer
(rubber) shell now most
commonly filled with saline
solution (salt Water) or a
cohesive silicone gel.
The breast implant is placed
either under your breast
(Subglandular position) or
under your pectoralis muscle
(Submuscular position). See
diagram below.
If the
implant is saline-filled, it
is usually inserted empty,
and then filled once it is
in place. One advantage of
this type of implant is that
it can usually be placed
through a small incision.
The incision is made as
small as possible, either in
the breast fold, under the
arm (axilla), or around the nipple.
If the
implant is gel filled, it
can be inserted through a
small incision at the areola
or under the breast fold-
either over or under the
chest wall muscle.
What
About The Surgery Itself?
We will
evaluate your current
physical health and health
history before scheduling
you for surgery.
Breast augmentation is
elective surgery.
Before you proceed, you and
your surgeon will have to
decide whether the benefits
of breast augmentation
surgery outweigh the risks
in your case.
The surgery
will be performed in our
facility or a nearby
surgery center. The
surgery usually lasts one to
two hours. General
anesthesia is most commonly
used.
How Will I
Feel After Surgery?
You'll probably feel
somewhat tired and sore for
several days following the
surgery, and your breasts
may remain swollen and
sensitive for as long as a
month. The full
results of your augmentation
may not be visible until
your breast tissue (and
muscle) adjusts.
You will most likely be
able to return to work
within a few days, although
you should avoid strenuous
activity for at least a
couple of weeks.
We will tell you more
about the usual recovery
process and any specific
recommendations bases on
your individual case.
Are you a
good candidate?
There are three
characteristics of a good
breast augmentation patient:
- >She has specific
concerns about the
size and shape of her
breasts.
- >She is
internally motivated
for herself, not
pressured by a husband
of partner.
- >She has
realistic expectations
for her post-operative
condition. She realizes
that surgery alone is
not going to cause a
drastic change in her
interpersonal
relationships.
