Sometimes after multiple
pregnancies or large weight
loss, abdominal muscles
weaken, and skin in the area
becomes flaccid.
Abdominoplasty can tighten
the abdominal muscles.
In men and women who have
fat that is concentrated in
the abdomen, the procedure
will remove excess skin and
fat. Sometimes,
Abdominoplasty may be
combined with liposuction, a
procedure to reduce areas of
fat accumulation, to achieve
the best result. In some
instances, when skin laxity
and muscle weakness are
limited to the area below
the navel, a modified or
mini-Abdominoplasty may be
recommended. If there
is a considerable amount of
skin an extended
abdominoplasty procedure may
be recommended.
To smooth out the abdomen,
we work through a low
abdominal incision that
spans the hips.
Because sagging skin will be
pulled down over the abdomen
before it is removed, it is
necessary to release the
navel from its surrounding
skin
and bring it out through a
new skin opening.
Resulting scars across the
pubic area and around the
navel are permanent but
flatten and lighten in color
over time.
Following Abdominoplasty,
you will be advised to wear
a light support garment for
two to three months and
avoid strenuous activity for
a few weeks.
Abdominoplasty is best
suited to women and men who
are in relatively good
shape, but have loose
abdominal skin and/or a
significant amount of
abdominal fat that won't
respond to dieting or
exercise.
You may be a good candidate
for Abdominoplasty if you
have one or more of the
following conditions:
- excess or loose,
sagging abdominal skin
- an abdomen that
protrudes and is out of
proportion to the rest
of the body
- abdominal muscles
that have been weakened
by pregnancy or aging
If you plan to become pregnant or lose a significant amount of weight, you
should discuss these plans
with your surgeon.
Scars from previous
abdominal surgeries may
limit the results of an
Abdominoplasty.
However, in some cases, an
existing scar can be used
for the new incision, as is
often the case for women
with cesarean section scars.
Some women can combine a
procedure such as a
hysterectomy with an
abdominoplasty. Please
discuss any plans you may
have with your surgeon at
the time of your
consultation.
A new procedure, known as
the
Mommy Makeover,
is quickly gaining
popularity among women
longing to restore their
bodies back to its
pre-pregnancy shape.
The most common patient is
between 25 and 45 years of
age, who has already had one
or more children. Body
contouring, breast surgery
and tummy tucks - alone or
in combination- are key
components of this new post-
pregnancy enhancement.
Liposuction and labiaplasty
can also be part of the mix.
If the appearance of your
genitalia has been affected
by pregnancy and if you are
self-conscious about it, we
can help.
